Day 98 - The Rumor

Milt heard it from his friend Bob. Wendy was seeing somebody behind his back. Bob was absolutely certain because he’d heard it from a very reliable source who had seen Wendy with another man in a very romantic situation.

It didn’t make sense to Milt. Wendy was totally loyal to him. Yet, Bob said he’d seen it. “Exactly who did you hear it from?” he asked Bob.

“The bartender at the Irish Pub on Lincoln. He was sure of it.”

“How would he even know who Wendy is?” Milt asked.

“Check it out yourself.”

Milt did just that. He walked down to the pub and found the bartender alone behind the bar. “My friend says you saw my wife in here with another man yesterday. What about it?”

“Who are you?” the bartender asked.

Milt pulled a photo out of his wallet. “This look like her?”

The bartender studied it. “Could be. You say she was here with a man yesterday? I did see a woman who liked like her.”

“Did you talk to Bob?”

“All I said was that she was having a great time. Seems like her name was Wendy, at least that’s what the guy was calling her.”

“Any idea who he was?”

“Of course. That guy over at the corner table. Alone today.”

Milt walked over to the man’s table and sat down.

“Got a question for you. Were you in here yesterday with this woman?”

The man shrugged and looked at the photo.

“Her name’s Wendy,” Milt said.

“What a coincidence,” the man said. “What’s your interest?”

“This is my wife and her name is Wendy.”

The man laughed. “Well, I’ll be damned. Your Wendy live in Oak Park?”

“No, we live on the other side of town.”

The man said, “Wendy’s my wife. Been married fifteen years. We come in occasionally. She really does look a bit like your wife. Your wife doesn’t have a scar on her left shoulder, does she?”

“No scar.” Milt stood up. “Sorry to have bothered you.”

He went home to his wife. Amazing, he thought, how rumors can mess you up if you’re not careful.
