Day 64 - The Cat Who Surprised us All

About three years ago, when my mother passed away, Sheri and I inherited her cat, Pusskitty. The cat had lived with her for three or four years and was a confirmed one person cat who ran from anyone but mother.

When we were trying to decide what to do with the cat, we got advice from all concerned that we should adopt him out to a family with no other animals. The vet said he would never adapt to a home with other animals.

Our problem was that we had two cats and one dog.

Pusskitty was such a sweet cat that we wanted the best for him so we tried to find a good home. No takers. There just didn’t seem to be a good match.

Finally the day came when Puss had to move to a new home somewhere. With no other options, we brought him down to our home in Irvine and installed him in my office with the door closed so the other animals couldn’t see him. True to form, he refused to come out of the closet for a week or two and then emerged with great trepidation. After a while he would come out of the closet for me but for nobody else.

Then one day one of the other cats slipped into my office and encountered Puss. They argued a bit but didn’t hurt each other. Gradually the other animals showed up and met Puss as well. Soon I was leaving the door open and eventually he ventured out in the big house.

Within a few weeks he was great friends with the dog and the other cats, cozying up to my wife and me and settling in to his new home. Turns out that everyone was wrong and three years later sweet little Pusskitty is very much at home with his brother cats and sister dog.

However, when strangers show up, he heads for the upstairs bed and hides until they go away. Oh, well, you can’t have everything.
