Day 60 - Starting My Business

About 10 years ago, when I was still working full time in Beverly Hills at
Beverly Hills 213 Magazine, I decided I needed to make more money. When I told my boss that, he suggested that I change my workweek from five days to three at the same salary.

This was a highly unusual answer in that most bosses will either say no or yes and if they do cut the days will cut the pay. Of course I had hoped for a raise but that wasn’t going to happen.

I saw this as an opportunity to do what I had wanted to do for a long time, start my own business. Of course, like all new ventures, this was easier said than done but what an opportunity, two free days to do with as I pleased.

First I had to figure out what I was going to do. Major decision. I had recently taken a coaching certification class and had thought that becoming a writing coach might the way to go. That, however, was just an idea until my two days opened up.

So writing coach it was. How to get started? I joined Professional Coaches and Mentors Association and said I was a writing coach. Since there were no other writing coaches in the group, I became known very quickly as the guy who did writing.

I also quickly realized that the other members were not competition but were my natural market. After all these were mostly executive coaches who in many cases wanted to write books or articles to make themselves stand out in their market. I quickly picked up some clients.

However, what put my business on the map happened a year or so later. One of the members suggested that PCMA put out a book of articles from various member coaches. I agreed to do so.

Six months later, the book, Coaching For the New Century, went on sale at the annual PCMA conference and almost sold out. Suddenly I was a book publisher, editor, and coach with an actual book to my credit.

And that was how I got started in the book writing and publishing business.
