Day 6 - On the Way to Alaska

In 1956 my dad and the whole family, my mother, my sister and my 78-year-old grandmother drove to Alaska towing and living in a 14-foot house trailer. The trip took eight weeks of driving over dirt roads and washouts, and plowing through dust and dirt.

Now my dad was a professional photographer who like all professionals needed to get his picture subject, site, lighting, and position exactly right, which meant a lot of stopping and starting and at times retracing our path.

Mom kept a trip log for each day so we would know where we were on the Alaska Highway.

One night after a particularly long day of photography, we sat around the table in the trailer. Mom made a few notes in her trip log.

My dad said, “Got a lot of good pictures today! How far did we go?”

“Let’s see. Looks like 87 miles,” mom said.

“Forward or backward?” grandma asked.
