Day 156 - Be Careful What You Wish For

Most people want something badly and in many cases are unable to get it. They fantasize about what it would be like if they did get what they wanted, how it would change their lives, how it would make things better, how they would have so much more, and so forth.

It’s not always good to get what you want and in some cases can be very bad for you.

A case in point.

Back in 1898, Theodore Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York as a Republican and a reformer. He put on a huge campaign to get rid of corruption in New York politics, including getting rid of the machines that dominated politics then.

Thomas Collier Platt, a senator from New York and a political boss, was upset at the way Roosevelt was running the state and came up with a plan to get him out of the way. He engineered his nomination as William McKinley’s vice presidential candidate in 1900 to in essence get him out of New York and out of politics for at least four years. In those days the vice presidency was a powerless office which involved doing virtually nothing.

Roosevelt was duly elected vice president and Platt went about getting compliant successor to Roosevelt in New York. His strategy appeared to have worked.

Then on September 6, 1901, President McKinley was shot and a few days later died. Roosevelt was now President of the United States and suddenly the most powerful Republican in the country.

Platt, who had thought he was rid of Roosevelt, suddenly found himself dealing with a powerful president and a newly resurgent governor of New York, who found his backbone after Roosevelt became president. Platt was effectively rendered powerless.

As I mentioned earlier, Platt wanted Roosevelt off the national stage so he got him into an insignificant office that held no power. Unfortunately for Platt, the office had one function, to provide a new president should something happen to the old one. It duly fulfilled that function.

So watch what you ask for.

You just might get it.
